The Studer S31 is a high-precision CNC cylindrical grinding machine engineered by Fritz Studer AG (part of the UNITED GRINDING Group), designed to deliver versatility, accuracy, and reliability for a broad range of grinding applications. From single prototype parts to high-volume production runs, the S31 stands out as a flexible solution for manufacturers who demand performance and quality from a universal grinding platform. Built to handle external, internal, and face grinding, the S31 accommodates workpieces of various sizes — from small to large — thanks to selectable distances between centers of 400 mm, 650 mm, 1000 mm, and 1600 mm, and a center height of 175 mm. The machine can handle parts weighing up to 150 kg (330 lbs), making it suitable for industries ranging from automotive to aerospace and heavy machinery, At the heart of the S31’s performance is its machine base made from Granitan® S103, a mineral casting material known for its excellent thermal stability and vibration damping. This construction helps maintain high precision even under changing temperature conditions, minimizing thermal distortion that could impact tolerances. The S31 typically is outfitted with a Fanuc control system (Fanuc 0i-TF standard, optional Fanuc 31i-B for high-speed machining), paired with Studer’s StuderWIN software. StuderWIN integrates decades of grinding expertise into an intuitive programming environment, enabling users to calculate optimal grinding parameters quickly based on minimal input and achieve consistent quality from the first pass.
